It’s said to be recovered

TM Streamyx gave out an announcement saying that the service disruption due to the breakdown of Segment 7 of the Asia Pacific Cable Network 2 (APCN2) undersea cable network between China and Taiwan have now been fully completed.

TM has already recovered 100% bandwidth capacity for its Internet traffic to the U.S and Northern Asia to-date. TM Internet and IP services as well as other critical business applications linked to the US and Northern Asia has resumed normal operations since Thursday, 10 September 2009. Therefore, all international links have been fully restored and our services have resumed back to normal.

We would like to thank our customers for their patience during the affected period. Customers can call TM at 100 and select “Internet Services” or e-mail us at [email protected] for any Internet related problems.

Thank You.

However,as a user,I could feel only a bit improvements on the said connectivity.TM really needs to put some more money to have more capacities and enhancements for users.

The sickness of international links

Because of the typhoon and the earthquake in Taiwan area recently, many undersea cables in that place were damaged. Those cables are the main pathways connecting North Asia,South East Asia,Europe and USA.

I’ve heard that Chinese users couldn’t login in MSN since yesterday. In Malaysia,we have to enjoy much slower international connections, especially to China and USA.

Telekom Malaysia released a piece of announcement several days ago explaining the current situation regarding to the disruptions on international link:

Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) wishes to announce that its consortium members have detected that a 2nd cable fault on Segment 7 of the Asia Pacific Cable Network 2 (APCN2) undersea cable network between China and Taiwan on Friday, 14 August 2009.

The fault follows three other service disruptions that recently hit the same cable network, affecting APCN2 Segment 7, between Hong Kong and Taiwan, and APCN2 Segment 1, which connects Singapore and Malaysia. The earlier faults on APCN2 Segment 1 were restored on Sunday, 16 August 2009.

As a result, customers using Internet services may continue to experience slow browsing while accessing websites hosted in the US and Northern Asia. In addition, customers using other IP services such as Virtual Private Network (VPN) over Internet and other critical business applications linked to the US and Northern Asia may experience some service degradation. To alleviate the problem, some of the links have been directed to alternate routes to ease the congestion.

Restoration works on the affected cables are already in progress. Full recovery of Internet services is expected to be on 10 September 2009. TM will make further announcements on the progress of the restoration works.

All right,we have to wait for at least some weeks to get improvements.I just wish that there won’t have any other disasters in the future. The Taiwanese have suffered too much!

New cable in Asia

Eight Asian carriers signed a memorandum of understanding for a new regional club cable, the Asia Pacific Gateway (APG) which will finally be capable to 4Tbps.

The 4Tbs subsea system will land at nine locations between Singapore and Japan and would go into service in 2011, NTT Communications said.

As well as NTT Com, the cable has investment from China Telecom, China Unicom, Chunghwa Telecom, KT, PLDT, Telekom Malaysia and VNPT.This new cable will increase the potential capabilities of bandwidth between major Asian countries and this planned cable also avoids the earthquake-prone and cable-heavy area to Taiwan’s south, where six cables were cut in an earthquake on Boxing Day 2006, slowing regional internet bandwidth to a crawl.

In the news,it indicates that the popular cable in Asia-APCN2 has only been utilized its 15% of potential capacity, but a rapid growth may be foreseen in a near future as high speed broadband is going to be introduced everywhere in Asia.

I always blame that Telekom Malaysia lacks international bandwidth, but I think it’s hard to be improved immediately. However, now I believe that TM could get a quick enhancement on its international bandwidth once if it does want to do so as there are still lots of available bandwidths in APCN2.

We need this new cable because it will be more stable and powerful than current ones. Will it then benefit the consumers of Telekom Malaysia?Strongly doubtful!

A delay on the restoration

Up to yesterday, the connections to foreign websites were still bad.I checked up the update in Streamyx official website there and found this piece of news:

Referring to our earlier statement on 31 March 2009 on the disruption of our Internet services due to circuit faults on the Southeast Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 3 (SMW3) cable network between Tuas, Singapore and Penang linking Malaysia to Hong Kong and Asia Pacific Cable Network 2 (APCN2) near Chongming, China connecting Malaysia to the United States, Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) wishes to announce that there is a delay in the restoration of Internet services due to technical problems at the repairing stages.

Due to the delay, full recovery of Internet services is now expected to be on 9 April 2009.

Customers using Internet services may continue to experience slow browsing while accessing websites hosted in the US and Hong Kong. In addition, customers using other IP services such as Virtual Private Network (VPN) and other critical business applications linked to the US and Hong Kong may also experience some service degradation. To alleviate the problem, some of the links have been directed to alternate routes to ease the congestion.

TM wishes to assure its customers that it is undertaking all necessary measures to restore communications services for its customers as soon as possible.

In fact,I has felt some improvement since today morning. How about you, guys?

Faults on undersea cables again and again

I don’t know why,but the fact is many faults of undersea cables have incurred in the past 4 months of this year.

Since yesterday,I felt I can’t get smooth access to some foreign websites again.I just guessed there was a problem of undersea cables.Well,TM confirms my assumption and announced a brief report regarding to the case today.TM and TM NET Streamyx

SERVICE INTERUPTION

Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) wishes to announce that there is a disruption of its Internet services due to circuit faults on the SMW3 between Tuas, Singapore and Penang linking Malaysia to Hong Kong and APCN2 near Chongming, China connecting Malaysia to the United States. As a result, customers using the Internet services may experience slow browsing while accessing websites hosted in the US and Hong Kong.

In addition, customers using other IP services such as Virtual Private Network (VPN) and other critical business applications linked to the US and Hong Kong may also experience some service degradation.

To alleviate the problem, some of the links have been rerouted to alternate routes to ease the congestion.

Restoration works on the affected cables are already in progress. However, during the restoration process, traffic to Northern America and Hong Kong may experience degradation. However, traffic to other countries will not be affected. TM expects complete recovery of its services by 5 April 2009 and will make further announcements on the progress of the restoration works.

TM wishes to assure its customers that it is undertaking all necessary measures to restore communications services for its customers as soon as possible.

Except waiting,I can’t figure out any further actions we could take.I’m thinking whether there is a kind of technologies which could make undersea cables more stable and solid. If there is,I hope that could be used as soon as possible. It’s so necessary!
