4G spectrum had been allocated by MCMC in Malaysia

The telecommunication industry regulator in Malaysia,MCMC(the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Comission) announced last night that they had assigned 2600MHz(2.6GHz) to 8 companies for deploying 4G LTE(Long Term Evolution) wireless technology.

The 8 companies are Celcom Axiata Bhd, DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd, Maxis Broadband Sdn Bhd, Packet One Networks (M) Sdn Bhd, Puncak Semangat Sdn Bhd, REDtone Marketing Sdn Bhd, U Mobile Sdn Bhd and YTL Communications Sdn Bhd.

From the aforementioned list, you could find that Celcom.DiGi,Maxis and U Mobile are the existing mobile telcos;P1 and YTL Communications(YES 4G) are running Wimax networks;REDtone is a MVNO(Mobile Virtual Network Operator) player currenting riding on Celcom network;Puncak Semangat is a new face in the industry, but the boss is well-known local billionaire, the richest Bumiputra corporate figure – Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary.

MCMC wants the existing telcos to take their experiences to build up reliable 4G networks while the new players may seek some innovative and create ways to compete with others.Well, the idea is good, but applying into Malaysia,I think it’s not good because Malaysia only has 28 million population.8 companies have to divide a small cake into tiny pieces and so perhaps no one could get full at last.

Anyway, they may go to consolidate the service later or share the infrastructures to improve the financial performance. At this moment,we could just wait for several months to see how they will make it done nicely.

P1 Wimax reveals a new plan

P1 Wimax started to introduce a new and cheaper plan-Wiggy 69 several days ago.

P1 Wiggy 69 The speed is capped at 800Kbps applicable to 5GB of fair usage threshold.I think this plan is only for the people who just use the broadband service to check emails and surf internet only because if playing streaming and downloading,it could reach the limitation on volume in one day.

Why are those wireless broadband service providers always set the price that high? It’s really not reasonable.

P1 Wimax,just good luck!

P1 expands to Ipoh and Kuala Terengganu

P1 Wimax expanded its coverage to Ipoh and Kuala Terengganu in last June.

P1 new coverageP1 has an objective to cover 90% population by the end of 2010.Thus,it now start to step into those small and medium size of cities in order to achieve that target. The latest news said that P1 may start to cover West Malaysia from next year too.

P1 provides a lot of packages to fit different users. However,I think the prices are still too high for me and the performance is not yet stable enough.

I think P1 still has a long way to go-while expanding the coverage,P1 must enhance the existing network to give more satisfactions to current users.

I hope P1 could do the things right!

Walking at PIKOM PC fair 2009(1)

I went there yesterday.Because yesterday was Friday and still a working day, there was not crowded at all.In fact, after walking around for an hour,I found this PIKOM PC fair was not so great as previous ones.Well,it’s the effect of economical recession perhaps.

The most hot hall was promoting broadband service. As I mentioned in the last post that P1 Wimax just launched their tiny portable device-WIGGY yesterday, they did the promotional event magnificently and pushed other ISPs joining the battle.I felt that I was really in a forest.Actually those promoters insect in every corner and I hope you could escape from their hunting.

Celcom promoters TM promoters

I met Mr. Yap in that hall who is the general manager of SyQic Capital, which works out Hypp.TV together with TM.He told me that he is doing his best to improve the quality of contents and is arranging to increase the numbers of channels from 30 to 50 by the end of this year.I appreciate to get his mid-long term plan and I think Hypp.TV could be an alternative option to Astro too if keeping on the track.

Mr. Yap also told me that the current monthly fee is RM9.90 without contract.People can try the service first for one month and then decide to renew it or reject it.More flexible packages will be on the market soon and at that time,Hypp.TV will be more productive and attractive.I’m willing to see the development.

WIGGY-P1 Wimax Portable Device

WIGGY is released. It dresses up a cool and sharp design and shows with a nice promotion currently.

WIGGY

In the running and upcoming PC fair,P1 Wimax will sell the device with the following plan.

WIGGY Promo Plan Do you mention that it provides up to 10Mbps for downlink?I think this is the fastest wireless broadband service in Malaysia currently and pays only RM149 per month.However,P1 Wimax still sets bandwidth limits for this package at 10GB monthly and frankly speaking,it burns my idea to try it.

My conclusion is this plan is for those young guys who may like surfing Internet all the time, but slightly downloading.

Anyway,I like to see those new stuff coming as more competitions between service providers will bring more benefits to consumers.

PS:I just came back from PIKOM PC fair in KL Convention Center and I saw the official launch and promotion there.I get some official source telling me that WIGGY,the modem itself is said to be capable of 20Mbps for downlink, but normally it could run at 5Mbps on average and once if you reach that 10GB cap, your speed will be locked at 400kbps (down) and 150kbps (up) respectively.

A bad story I had is one showgirl of P1 Wimax introduced this new product to me and said to me that Wimax never has any long latency issues as other wireless broadband such as HSPA and upon reaching the limits of 10GB,the speed would only be slightly moved to 4.8Mbps(down).I didn’t record her name and didn’t want to blame her either. However,we know that is a kind of misleading and hard sell.P1 Wimax, you have to train your employees to know all basic knowledge of your product.Otherwise, your brand will lose trust from consumers.

P1 Wimax keeps expanding

P1 Wimax is building its territory smoothly. From the current coverage map,you could find Klang Valley area and Pulau Pinang are the prioritized places that it intends to develop.

P1 Wimax coverage in PJ,Klang and KL. I feel that 30-40% of tactical residential areas in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur are covered currently. However, the development in Pulau Pinang is just at a start point.

P1 Wimax coverage in Penang Well, only this small part of places are under coverage now.I heard that the process of expansion in Penang meets some problems as some people voices out with their negative opinions.I hope the issue could bypass in a very near future so that the plan to build Penang as another cyber city in Malaysia will only be fulfilled.

P1 Wimax plan

The above table is the current plans.I have to say that the cost for high speed access plans(2.4Mbps) are definitely high and uncompetitive, meanwhile, there are still some fair usage policy working on ‘Home Plan’.

Since Digi had entered the battle and HSBB is close to the door too.I hope that could push the ISPs to reduce their prices on broadband service and give us more choices.

For me,I do think the quality of service is damn important!
